Expectations are running very high for the Canes this season. Head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff have a talented and deep roster going into fall practice.

STORYLINES…August 4, 2026

UPDATE: 3:00 p.m.

David Lake over at InsideTheU, believes Miami will give Samson Okunlola an opportunity to start at left tackle with true freshman Jackson Cantwell breaking in at left guard.

Sebastian Ford, at CanesInsight, pointed out the intense battle between between transfer WR Cooper Barkate and CB O.J. Frederque. Iron sharpening iron.

True freshman CB Jaelen Waters had a exceptional day to start fall camp.

Veteran tight end Elija Lofton displayed his new physique, resulting in improved athleticism, explosiveness and contested ball ability. True freshmen Israel Briggs and Gavin Mueller also made impressive contested catches.

At defensive tackle, the duo of Ahmad Moten Sr. and Justin Scott were a wrecking crew when on the field on Tuesday.

Mario Cristobal earns a contraction extension.

The biggest storyline opening fall practice is the long-term contract extension earned by head coach Mario Cristobal late Monday. While details have not surfaced publicly, it is believed to be a long-term contract that will keep our head coach at his alma mater for years to come. In four years, Coach Cristobal has transformed the football program back to national prominence, competing for championships. Congratulations, coach! Well deserved!

Position Battles…

Across America, position battles are the norm. While it appears Miami has very few holes on their roster, there are some important questions that need answers. It starts with the offensive line, the foundation of every Cristobal team. Miami must replace four starters this season.

But the cupboard is far from bare.

The first question comes at the critical left tackle spot where true freshman Jackson Cantwell will be thrown into the fire. Can Jackson quickly assimilate into the college game? The elite talent is there. Veteran transfer Jamal Meriweather will push for playing time and give the Canes experienced depth.

At left guard, former 5-star Samson Okunlola will get his chance to shine. While the “Pancake” has battled injuries during his years at Miami, it appears he’s healthy and ready to assume a leadership role on this line. True freshman Ben Congdon will cut his teeth under Samson.

At center, veteran Ryan Rodriguez will take over anchoring the line. He’d experienced, tough and smart. And he will mentor young bucks such as sophomore Seuseu Alofaituli, freshmen JJ Sparks and Rhys Woodrow for the future.

At right guard, we could have a battle on our hands. Sophomore Max Buchanan enters competition as the leader, with veteran Johnathan Cline and freshman Joel Ervin pushing for playing time.

At right tackle, the task of replacing former first-rounder Francis Mauigoa will be challenging and important. Former starting left guard Matthew McCoy has been moved to right tackle. Matt brings solid game experience and the size and skill to compete with the best. Freshmen Jaden Wilkerson will backup McCoy and compete for an expanded role in 2026.

Offensive line coach Alex Mirabal will be testing combinations along the line during camp to determine the best starting five for the Canes. It should be interesting to watch this play out.

Roster Announcements…

Early Tuesday morning, head coach Cristobal appeared on The Joe Rose Show on WQAM-560. He made announcements on status of a number of players.

Former 5-star defensive end Hayden Lowe will not be part of Miami’s team in 2026. Hayden sustained an upper extremity injury during the 2025 fall camp, knocking him out for the season. He also missed a month of spring practice due to undisclosed reasons. He returned to campus for the summer team activities but was absence from media day yesterday. Hayden was expected to compete for a rotation role is fall. While he is expected to return to the field in 2027, it doesn’t appear it will be on Greentree.

Tight End Luka Gilbert sustained an injury at home this summer and will miss the 2026 season. He is expected back in 2027. True freshman Gavin Mueller and walk-on tight end Owen Ruskavich will compete are expected to complete for the in-line tight end role on the offense.

Defensive end Third Scroggins is set to return from a minor offseason injury. In 2025, he played 76 snaps as a true freshman. Scroggins is expected to compete for a rotation spot at defensive end.

True freshman defensive back Jontavius Wyman, a native of Jonesboro, Georgia, has left the team.
