HEISMAN?

The whole nation was watching. Miami sophomore wide receiver sensation Malachi Toney just turned in a record setting performance in Miami’s 45-6 victory over Stanford in Palo Alto. He also sent a strong message to Heisman Trophy voters.

Toney’s performance included 233 receiving yards, a single game school record, on 12 pass receptions and three touchdowns in less than three quarters. After two of his touchdown receptions, Malachi broke into the famous Heisman Trophy pose.

The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the nation’s best college football player each year. Over the years, the voters have favored the quarterback position. Since 2000, only three non-quarterbacks have won the award. In 2020, Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith took home the Trophy. Before Smith, Alabama running back Derrick Henry won the award. Before Henry, Alabama running back Mark Ingram won it in2009 and USC running back Reggie Bush captured the most coveted college football award in 2005. 82% of the Heisman winners since 2000 were quarterbacks.

Does this reality mean Malachi Toney needs to transfer to Alabama or that Miami needs to trade its iconic flame orange for crimson? Not going to happen, but we may need to pump our brakes on Malachi’s chances.

And a big competitor might be a teammate. Say hi to QB Darian Mensah! Both are rising in voters eyes. Unfortunately, that may hurt both as they may take votes away from each other.
