Miami will enter the 2027 football season as the heavy favorite to win the ACC and again return to the College Football Playoffs.

CaneReports will now examine each position group and the strengths and weaknesses of each group. Next up is Miami’s ... DEFENSIVE LINE.

Current Situation:

College football continues to change and evolve. It used to b you had strong-side and weakside defensive ends. That evolve to feature edge rushers and defensive ends. Today we are moving to classifying defensive ends as edge rushers due to the importance of rushing the passer. That was exemplified in 2025 by Miami’s Rueben Bain and Akeem Mesidor. Both wer first round draft picks in the spring.

Miami must now replaced those edge rushers. But can the Canes remain dominant across the defensive line in 2026?

If there is a position group at Miami that year over year has turned out good to excellent players, it’s the defensive line under coaches Jason Taylor and Damian Lewis. And their cabinet is not empty. Miami has a talented and deep stable on the defensive line. However, they’re young and must take the next step to greatness. All the talent and tools are there.

DEPTH CHART:

EDGE RUSHERS:

The Canes have a very talented and deep group of edge rushers. But they are relatively inexperienced. So, Miami went to the transfer portal for some experience and production. They landed rising senior Damon Wilson from Missouri. At 6’-4”/250, Damon brings SEC experience and production. In 2025, he recorded 23 tackles (9 1/2 for loss), nine sacks and one interception. He ranked second in the SEC with 54 pressures.

Competing for the second edge spot is a group of former blue chip prospects, including Marquise Lightfoot, Armondo Blount Hayden Lowe and Herbert Scroggins III. The competition will be intense.

Younger bucks like Booker Pickett Jr., Asharri Charles, and DeAnthony Lafayette are are looking to take the next steps in their development.

DEFENSIVE TACKLES:

Miami’s defensive interior will feature veterans Ahmad Moten Sr., and Justin Scott, with transfers Jarquez Carter (Ohio State) and Keona Davis (Nebraska) providing Big Ten experience and solid depth. Behind them will be a couple of young studs looking to breakout and compete for playing time, including Tyson Bacon, Mykah Newton.

Freshmen Keshawn Stancil, Isaac Chukwurah, Logan Nagle, Fred Sainteus will take their first development steps in 2026 and make an impact early.

BOTTOM LINE:

Miami has a very large and talented defensive line room. However, it’s relatively inexperienced and the staff will need to speed their development to maintain their Miami’s dominant edge in the trenches.

GO CANES!
