Big-12 Conference… “We're in the event business.”

October 21, 2026 - Big-12 commissioner Brett Yormark doesn’t appear to be a happy camper these days.
In an ESPN interview at the Big-12 media day on Tuesday, Yormark said his conference would replace conference championships with something else if the CFP were to replace or eliminate conference championship games.

“Nothing is final, so I don't want to get too much into the details there, but tentpole events, for us, matter,” said Yormark. ”Our championship game has been very valuable. Our basketball tournament, both men's and women's, has been very valuable. And if there is a point in time where a change is made, we will look to backstop those events with other events. We're in the event business. It drives a lot of fan engagement and excitement, so we'll see what happens in the future, but those are big moments for us. And if for some reason, if one goes away, we'll replace it with something different.”
Rumors have circulated about a number of NCAA conferences having conversations about possible mergers, even breaking away from the NCAA. It’s obvious conferences and schools are not happy about the proposed CFP expansion to 24 schools.
Will we see a palace revolt? Time will tell.
GO Canes!
