Our Hurricanes have come a long way since the arrival of head coach Mario Cristobal. He has built the program back to a top tier level in four years. Still, there is more work to do to reach the top of the mountain.
That work involves on consistent field success, higher financial funding and strategic facility development.
Field Success:
For more than twenty years, Miami lived in the “glory days” with nothing but frustration and mediocre results on the field. In 2022, the university made a bold move to bring Mario Cristobal, a proven head coach, alumni and south Florida native, to rebuild the football program. After four years on the job, it has already turned the program around. Last season our Canes played for the national championship.
Are we back? Only time will tell
Facilities Development:
Since the demise of our beloved Orange Bowl, Miami has called Hard Rock Stadium home, despite its location 25 miles from campus. It’s a wonderful venue but it’s not really home?
Over the years, there have been efforts to build a stadium for our football program. All have failed due to a number of reasons including financial, political and fan support, or a lack thereof.
Miami’s lease of Hard Rock Stadium runs through 2028. With the Canes on field success the past two years, fans are coming back. We use to struggle to consistently get 45,000 fans at a home game. Today, we are playing in front of 55,000+ fans more often.
But not on a consistent basis.
Fan Support:
Miami’s lack of success on the field the past twenty-five years makes it financially hard to afford a new stadium. And Miami is a relatively small university with a smaller alumni base. Unfortunately, that has meant playing in a half empty stadium on many occasions. But with recent success on the field, attendance has grown substantially. We believe Miami can now consistently draw 50,000+ fans with a truly competitive program. We feel Miami is close to reaching that level. Unfortunately, Hard Rock Stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 65,000. That means even with a good turnout, there are 15,000 empty seats. Our competitors continue to negatively recruit based on those empty seats. Prospects want to play to full houses.
What is the right size stadium for our university?
Hard Rock is too big and far from campus. Yes, if we are playing Florida State, Florida or Notre Dame then Hard Rock is a great venue. But that happens maybe once a season. Is it worth it for the other 5-6 games each season?
What are Miami’s options?
Remember, “if we continue to do the same thing, we should expect to get the same results.” The university shifted a paradigm when they hired Mario Cristobal. Is it time to shift another paradigm with a strategically placed “HOME” stadium?
Financial Development:
The current search for a new athletic director may hold the next key. It’s been reported the university wants the successful candidate to have proven business and fund raising experience...a deal maker.
More to come.
GO CANES!
