CaneReports continues its series on the next wave of realignment. This series is focused on potential scenarios for Miami and the ACC.

Make no mistake, the next wave of realignment is coming.

Today, we conclude our series with a final scenario, the total breakaway from the Atlantic Coast Conference by ten schools to form a new conference, the Atlantic Ten.

In out last report, we examined a scenario where the ACC created a new tier in football consisting of eight schools with a separate revenue sharing model.

However, we feel the remaining 10 schools would reject such a scenario, thus forcing the eight breakaway schools to expand their base by two additional schools to force a motion to dissolve the conference. At least 50% of the member schools have to vote for the conference to dissolve.

But which schools would join the breakaway group?

The Notre Dame Conundrum…

Of course, our new conference would invite Notre Dam to join. However, nobody felt the Irish would give up their independence to join a fledgling conference. But our new conference is open to a strategic scheduling agreement with Notre Dame, similar to the agreement with the ACC for five games each year.

We moved on.

Out team at CaneReports carefully analyzed the remaining ten schools to determine the best schools to invite into membership. We asked five questions.

Q1. Which school is located in the largest population market?

Of the remaining schools, SMU has the largest TV market (Dallas-Ft. Worth) at 1,337,417 (World Population Review)

Q2. Which school has the highest football TV viewership?

Of the remaining schools, Duke has the highest average TV viewership at 2.63M per game. (Nelson)

Q3. Which school honors fan convenience and rivalries with the base eight schools?

Of the remaining schools, Duke is the closest to the most eight original schools.

Q4. Which school is located in a strategic recruiting market?

Of the remaining schools, SMU is located in the talent-rich state of Texas and the Dallas-Ft. Worth recruiting hot bed.

Q5. Which school provides the best competitive athletic program going forward?

Duke’s football program is trending upward after winning the ACC Football Championship in 2025. The basketball program is already a national super power.

BOTTOM LINE:

Two schools stood out for membership, Duke and SMU.

Duke brings viewership, competitiveness and tradition, while SMU brings market size and a recruiting hot bed.

These schools would round out the new Atlantic 10 Conference.

The new Atlantic Ten would consist of ten schools, playing a nine-game conference schedule, with three additional non-conference games each year.
