Canes shut out Blue Devils, 9-0

Miami brought their A game on Saturday to defeat Duke, 9-0, in Durham.


Miami starter Rob Evans (4-1) turned in a very strong performance, going 6 2/3 innings, giving up no runs on four hits while striking out five and walking four. Reliever Lyndon Glidewell closed out the Blue Devils over the last 2 1/3 while striking out five batters.


Miami’s bats came alive after being shut out on Friday, collecting 10 hits. Derek Williams and Alonzo Alvarez each drove in three runs, with Williams capping off the run explosion with a home run in the ninth.


Miami (14-5, 2-3 ACC) got off to a fast start with three runs in the first inning. Jake Ogden scored on a wild pitch. Williams drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Alvarez singled for the early lead.


The Canes extended their lead in the second inning, plating another four runs highlighted by Alvarez stroking a two-run single. Jake Ogden knocked the a run in the third inning and Williams homered in the ninth to cap Miami’s scoring.


With the series tied, the teams will play the rubber game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. due to bad weather forecast in the afternoon. ACCNX will provide coverage.
