August 23, 2026 - Recently at the SEC Media Days, commissioner Greg Sankey flexed his muscle again and made a statement that if the Protect College Athletics bill was not passed by the U.S. Congress, his conference and the Big Ten Conference would seriously consider leaving the NCAA and forming their own association/super conference.
Why?
Money, of course. Those two conferences want to maintain their power over college athletics by keeping the status quo.
Specifically, they don’t want another wave of realignment. The current bill would restrict Power Four schools from moving to another Power Four conference without serving a five-year sentence as an independent. This provision, combined with a conference membership cap of nineteen schools, would accomplish that goal. The SEC ad Big Ten schools do not want to slice up their revenue pie into smaller and more slices as a result of expansion.
If the SEC and Big Ten were to form their own “Super Conference," what would happen to the rest of college athletics?
One option would be for the ACC, Big-12 and selected schools to form their own “Super Conference.”
For talking purposes, let’s call it the United States College Athletics (U.S.C.A.)
The new USCA would be formed from primarily the ACC and Big-12 conferences, with the addition of seven new selected schools to bring the association to forty (40) schools.
The USCA would form into four division, with ten schools in each. The division champions would participation a four school National Championship Playoff using existing bowl games.
Below is a potential four-division model for the USCA.
East Division:
Boston College
Connecticut
Syracuse
Army
Pittsburgh
West Virginia
Navy
Cincinnati
Louisville
Notre Dame
South Division:
Virginia
Virginia Tech
North Carolina
NC State
Duke
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Florida State
Central Florida
Miami
Central Division:
SMU
TCU
Baylor
Texas Tech
Houston
UTSA
Tulane
Oklahoma State
Kansas
Kansas State
West Division:
BYU
Utah
Colorado
Air Force
Iowa State
Arizona State
Arizona
UNLV
Stanford
California
BOTTOM LINE:
A. The ACC and Big-12 must Fight Fire with Fire.
B. Go BIG or Go Home.
C. Strength in Numbers.
GO CANES!
