The Louisville Cardinals (5-1, 2-1), handed the Miami Hurricanes their first loss of the season, 24-21, on Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium.

First Half:

The Cardinals jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before the Canes scored on a 2-yard run by Mark Fletcher. The rest of the first half was marred by two interceptions and penalties. Miami final posted a 27-yard field goal by Carter Davis to close the gap

to 14-10 at halftime.

Second Half:

Miami’s sloppy play continued in the second half with more penalties. Louisville stretched its lead in the third quarter on a 48-yard field goal by Cooper Ranvier. After trading possessions, Miami drove to the Cardinals 23-yard line before Carter Davis kicked a 41-yard field goal to close the gap to 17-13 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter started with the Cardinals on the Canes 43 yard line. On a critical 3rd and 3 yards, Cardinals quarterback Miller Moss hit wide receiver Chris Bell for 36-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 24-13.

Given up for dead, Miami safety Zechariah Poyser recovered a Louisville fumble on the Cardinals’ 12-yard line. Miami freshman Malachi Toney then scored on a 12-yard run. Miami went for the two point conversation. Toney took a reverse and passed to CJ Daniels to complete the two-part conversion and narrow Louisville’s lead to 24-21.

Miami’s defense held on the next Cardinals possession. Miami was driving into Louisville territory at the Cardinals’ 42-yard line. A Beck pass was then deflected and intercepted to seal the game.

Miami finished with 334 yards of total offense. Louisville finished with 367 yards of total offense. Carson Beck went 25-35 (71.4%) for 271 yards. But it was four interceptions that separated the Cardinals from the Canes.

BOTTOM LINE:

Louisville’s offensive line matched up well against Miami’s defensive line, giving up only one sack and five tackles for loss. Carson Beck surrendered four interceptions to kill Miami drives.

Miami will host the Stanford Cardinal next Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. EST. National TV coverage will be provided on ESPN, with local radio coverage on 560-WQAM.
