The Canes bounced back from their loss to Florida with a 99-82 win over Elon on Thursday evening.
Miami (4-1) used balanced scoring and a tenacious defense, led by junior scoring guard Tru Washington's double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds). Freshman Shelton Henderson and Tre Donaldson both contributed 18 points and Malik Reneau chipped in 17 points in the winning effort.
Miami’s defense was the key to the win. The Canes delivered 25 points off 18 turnovers that allowed them to control the game. The Canes never trailed, going into halftime leading 48-41. Miami pulled away in the second half, triggered when Donaldson went on a run, scoring on a jumper and four free throws.
For the night, Miami shot 54.4 percent (37 of 68) from the floor. Elon (3-2) hit on 51.0 percent from the floor but Miami’s defense never let them on a consistent run.
Miami continues their homestead on Sunday, hosting Delaware State. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. with coverage on ACCNX.
GO CANES!
