The NCAA officially announced Wednesday the elimination of the spring transfer window. The reform will bring major changes to the timing and duration of the off-season transfer period in college football.
The Division I Administrative Committee did not, however, establish Jan. 2-11 as the lone portal window for FBS and FCS players. Under the proposed plan, players will have 10 days to enter the portal but are under no deadline to make a commitment to their next school once they enter.
In 2024-25, the NCAA transfer portal consisted of a winter portal window (Dec. 9-28) and a spring window (April 16-25.) More than 3,200 players entered the portal during the two open windows.
The spring window came under fire by coaches because of post spring practice departures leading to roster chaos going into summer and with players using it to leverage for more NIL money to not leave their school.
BOTTOM LINE:
The NCAA is trying to seize back control of player movement while compiling with court antitrust laws.
GO CANES!
