Miami defeated Wake Forest, 3-1, in a pitching duel on Friday night at Light Field.
Miami starter Rob Evans and Wake starter Chris Levonas dueled for four innings before the Canes’ bats kicked in to take the lead, 1-0. Evans (7-1) tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one unearned run while scattering sevens hits, striking out five and walking two.
Miami (26-8, 7-6 ACC) finally took the lead in the fifth inning when Vance Sheahan drove in Derek Williams on a fielder’s choice. One inning later Williams extended Miami’s lead to 3-0 with a two-run double.
The Canes defense was instrumental in the win, turning double-plays in the fourth and fifth innings to stop potential Wake threats. The Demon Deacons (23-12, 8-8) scored their only run on an error in the seventh inning. Relievers Lyndon Glidewell and Frank Menendez closed out the game for the Canes.
The teams will continue their three-game series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. ET with coverage on ACCNX and WVUM.
GO CANES!
