With Miami’s first loss of the season, the College Football Playoff committee is making contingency plans if the Canes host a first round playoff game at Hard Rock Stadium on Dec. 20.

Why?

LaLiga, Spain’s premier soccer league, announced its plans to hold the Barcelona-Villarreal game in Miami on Dec. 20 at Hard Rock Stadium. That’s the same day as the first round of the college football playoffs.

With Miami's loss to Louisville, the Canes' chances of hosting a playoff game that day could come into play. If this scenario becomes reality, Miami and the CFP must have a contingency plan to avoid a major scheduling conflict.

Currently, the soccer game is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m. ET. at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami could host a playoff game later that night. A second option would be to have the playoff game on another day or at another location. Both options would require ESPN to find an alternate television kickoff time.

Therein, lies the problem.

The CFP committee is expecting Miami to provide an alternate location this week. The University of Miami is considering Orlando, Florida. That solution would be the worst-case scenario and a potential disaster for Miami’s fanbase and program.

This situation again draws into question the viability of Hard Rock Stadium as a home stadium that is not owned and controlled by the university. Over the years, there have been a number of stadium plans presented for a university stadium on or near campus.

If this situation materializes, a heated debate will be rekindled.

GO CANES!
