Part Five...
For decades, the NCAA has struggled to keep the association viable and alive. It needs to be fixed.
I have a plan!
My plan may not be perfect, but it will begin to fix the problems facing the NCAA. I’m not professing to get rid of the NCAA. Just restructure and streamline it.
In part four of this series, we reorganized our product lines, eliminating the old and outdated conference structure.
Today, we will redesign our flagship product, the College Football Playoffs (CFP).
Every year, the current national championship playoffs are filled with controversy. Currently, the selection process is influenced by regional writers (ranking polls) and a selection committee. In addition, the public believes the networks are influencing the process to maximize viewership, resulting in more advertising revenue for them. Our customers want the championship earned on the field of play, not in polls or by a selection committee influenced by a distribution contractor (networks).
Our goal here is to eliminate controversy in the selection process.
STEP EIGHT: Selection will only be by winning a Division Championship. That means an eight-school playoff. The bracket will be set using a lottery ball machine. No more seeding by committee or poll ranking.
STEP NINE: The new playoff model will require seven games, using traditional bowls over the holidays. The championship game will occur before the end of January when school final exams. Let’s give our young men a chance to excel on the most important thing, their education.
Here’s a hypothetical model using 2025-26 calendar…
First Round: Peach Bowl Dec. 20 2:00 p.m. ET
Alamo Bowl Dec. 24 1:00 p.m. ET
Citrus Bowl Dec. 25 2:00 p.m. ET
Fiesta Bowl Dec. 26 4:00 p.m. ET
Semi-Finals: Sugar Bowl Jan. 1 1:00 p.m. ET
Cotton Bowl Jan. 1 5:00 p.m. ET
Championship: Rose Bowl Jan. 10 4:00 p.m. ET
NOTE: Transfer Portal window - Jan. 12-16
BOTTOM LINE:
To win the national championship, you must earn it on the field of play. No more controversy!
In part SIX of our series, we take back control of our business…in the courts.
Until then…
GO CANES!
