With one game remaining in the regular season, No. 14 Miami (9-2, 5-2 ACC) is still barely in contention for the ACC Championship Game and a ticket to the College Football Playoff.
On Saturday, the Canes took care of business by solidly defeating Virginia Tech, 34-17. That victory, coupled with Pitt’s win over Georgia Tech, opens a narrow road to Charlotte for Miami.
For Miami to get to Charlotte, the following must happen this coming week.
A. Miami must beat Pitt on Saturday. A victory would give the Canes a 10-2, 6-2 ACC record.
B. Georgia must defeat Georgia Tech, giving the Yellow Jackets a 9-3, 6-3 ACC record.
C. California must beat SMU in Berkley on Saturday night, giving the Mustangs a 8-4, 6-2 ACC record.
A Miami victory over Pitt AND a Georgia Tech loss to Georgia AND a SMU loss to Cal would set up a probable Miami (10-2, 6-2 ACC) matchup with Virginia (10-2, 7-1 ACC) in the ACC Championship Game.
A Miami victory in the ACC Championship game would take the Canes headlong into the College Football Playoffs.
A 10-2 record would probably not get Miami into the CFP, even with a solid victory over the then #6 Fighting Irish. To many teams (Alabama, BYU, Utah) to jump.
BOTTOM LINE:
Miami needs to take care of business again this week and hope for help from the Bulldogs and Bears.
GO CANES!
