IF I was commissioner… part 5

Just about every college sports fan in America agrees that college athletics is broken.

Recently, President Trump even convened a “round table" at the White House with the leaders in college athletics to discuss the situation. Out of that meeting came his announcement that he would deliver a white paper outlining solutions to this mess.

That got me thinking. Yea, that could be scary but perhaps intriguing.

What if the president recommends a new leadership structure with a strong single leader to pave the way for reform that builds back public trust and support?

What if the president announced ME as commissioner?

OK, you can stop laughing and get up off the floor. As doubtful as that seems, it could be interesting. So, I set out to cobble a high-level strategic plan.

STEP EIGHT: Form the CENTRAL DIVISION

I continue our strategic reconstruction with another common sense move, the formation of the CENTRAL DIVISION.

  1. Ohio State

  2. Michigan

  3. Michigan State

  4. Indiana

  5. Purdue

  6. Illinois

  7. Northwestern

  8. Iowa

  9. Wisconsin

  10. Minnesota

I can hear it now. "That’s the old Big Ten!" Yep, we valued geography and tradition in our deliberations. Back to the Future!

Like the Southwest Division, the Central division will be managed by a senior vice president (SVP) reporting directly to ME, the CEO. The SVP will represent the athletic directors (10) of the member schools and sit on the Executive Council.

The Central Division will be made up of schools from the original Big Ten conference. Again, fans, coaches, players and staff will once again celebrate the rich regional rivalries that made our sport(s) so great.

BOTTOM LINE:

Change occurs only when the pain to stay the same exceeds the pain to change.

In part six of our series, we will breakdown another new division, the SOUTH DIVISION.

GO CANES!
