Miami beats SMU, 77-69, to clinch a 3-seed.

No. 22 Miami traveled to Dallas on Wednesday night to take on SMU in the last regular-season road game. The Canes came away with a 77-69 victory, clinching the 3-seed in next week’s ACC Tournament.


While the Canes never trailed but the Mustangs kept it close in the first half, going into the break trailing 38-31. Miami took firm control early in the second half as Tre Donaldson (layup), Shelton Henderson (dunk) and Donaldson hit a 3 pointer for a 45-31 lead. SMU rallied late but the Canes went on a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to 60-44. The Mustang tried to again rally but the Canes were too much this night.


Leading the way for the Canes were seniors Tre Donaldson and Malik Reneau. Donaldson pumped in a team high 17 points while Reneau registered another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Tru Washington , Noam Dovrat and Shelton Henderson chipped in 15, 12 and 11 points, respectively..


Miami (24-6, 13-4 ACC) shot 47.4 percent (27 of 57) from the floor and tied a season-high with 11- three pointers on 18 attempts (61.1 percent) while holding SMU (19-11, 8-9) to 41.3-percent (26 of 63) shooting from the field.


Miami will enter the ACC tournament play with a double bye. But first, the Canes return home to host Louisville for the regular-season final on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPNU.
